Big Horn Basin Geochemical Study

Geochemistry and Exploration Significance of Crude Oils and Natural Gases from the Big Horn Basin

GeoMark has completed an investigation of the geochemistry of oils and gases from the Big Horn Basin.   The intent of this project was to: 1) analyze a large number of oil and gas samples from the basin; 2) define the major petroleum systems implied by the geochemistry of these samples; and, 3) identify under-explored plays, and search the data set for oils and gases that are vagrants.

Each oil was characterized by an analytical program that included bulk compositional data, quantitative analysis of aromatic and saturate (terpanes and steranes) biomarkers, and determinations of stable isotope compositions of the saturate and aromatic hydrocarbon fractions.    Classification of geochemical data was accomplished using cluster and principal component analyses.
