Eastern Australia Oil Study

Regional Petroleum Geochemistry and Correlation of Crude Oils from Basins of Eastern Australia

GeoMark Research in conjunction with the Australian Geological Survey Organization (AGSO) has performed a regional assessment of Eastern Australia utilizing the detailed analysis of a suite of 250 crude oil samples. These samples represent all the productive and frontier basins, both onshore and offshore.  The purpose of the study was to identify and characterize each of the petroleum systems which have sourced oil, and to predict their importance to future exploration.

Each of the oils was characterized by a detailed analytical program which includes quantitative biomarker analysis of terpanes and steranes and determination of stable carbon isotope composition of both saturate and aromatic hydrocarbon fractions. This information, integrated with known source rock data, allowed us to identify, characterize, and quantify the petroleum systems active within each of the basins/regions. This study is valuable to companies considering bidding in the upcoming acreage releases in the Cooper and Gippsland Basins.

The Eastern Australia Oil Study compliments the Western Australia Oil Study that was completed in 1996. This study provided a detailed assessment of the petroleum systems in the Perth, Carnarvon, Browse, Canning, and Bonaparte Basins. Please feel free to contact us concerning either of these studies.
