Greenhorn Formation Resource Potential Study

An ArcGIS Geochemical Database and Integrated Petroleum System Report West Texas &Southeast New Mexico

GeoMark Research has completed a regional assessment of the resource potential of the Upper Cretaceous Greenhorn, Carlile, and Graneros Formations. This study maps the source potential for both oil and gas and concludes with an estimation of oil and/or gas in place. By comparing present-day organic richness to calculated original richness we estimated the quantities of hydrocarbon generated, and calculated the hydrocarbon in place (oil, condensate and/or gas).  Differences in the productive character and capacity of the Greenhorn Formation were mapped and a geographic evaluation of resource potential is provided.

This project produced an organic geochemical characterization of the Greenhorn Formation in each of the basins studied. A final report provides interpretations and conclusions resulting from mapping and analysis of the combined data sets.

In its entirety, the study involves the source rock analysis of over 230 samples from more than 55 individual wells or outcrop locations, and the detailed oil analysis of an estimated 25 oil samples that have been sourced by the Greenhorn. Although not strictly a part of this study, a GeoMark proprietary technique was also be used to identify produced gases in the study basins that may have been sourced from the Greenhorn Formation.
