Red River-Winnipeg Resource Potential Study

Geochemistry and Exploration Significance of Oils and Source Rock Samples from the Ordovician of the Williston Basin

GeoMark Research has completed a regional assessment of the resource potential of the Ordovician section of the Williston Basin. The study evaluates numerous units, but concentrates mainly on the Red River and Winnipeg formations. The study maps the source potential for oil, condensate, and gas and concludes with an estimation of oil and/or gas in place. In its entirety, the study involves the source rock analysis of over 350 rock samples from over 100 individual wells and the detailed oil analysis of over 100 oil samples that have been sourced by the Ordovician section in the Williston Basin.

This project produced an organic geochemical characterization of the Ordovician formations across the entire basin. The distribution of Ordovician-sourced oils guided the selection of wells for source rock analysis, and the oil data provided beneficial support for mapping changes in facies, thermal maturity, and overall potential. Maps of present-day organic richness, calculated original richness, quantities of hydrocarbon generated, and estimates of hydrocarbons in place form the basis of the interpretive report.
